Hello and hey there! You have found your way to the Creative Collective Blog…which hopefully means you are a part of the Creative Collective email list. If not we will cover that later.
So, you’re interested in upholstery…and DIY…and blacksmithing…and woodworking…and sewing! Okay, maybe not all of those things but that is what this blog is all about, creating a life we love! We may not be great at all of it but we have a passion for sustainability, tradition, family, and legacy. I’m not sure I’ve met someone in one of these trades that did not put value on creating and/or keeping something well made to pass on to others for generations to come. What was matters. That includes the craftsmanship of all the different trades and skills that built our world. There I go, getting way too deep into my passions before we’ve even really started! Let me touch on some lighter subjects for a minute.
Upholstery ~ A Way Of Life
I have been in the upholstery trade for 11 years now. It started as a creative outlet for me in an effort to cope with all the hardships of being a parent to a child with severe physical disabilities. Now, over a decade later, it has become a way of life for me. I had this older woman, a rancher, bring in her aunt and mother’s favorite chair to be re-done. I did my best to honor the love that was in that chair and it brought tears to my client’s eyes. That is what I love about my “job”.

My children were all raised in the workroom. The joint that created keeps us connected in a special way even as they grow and begin to lead their own lives.
The families I have been able to connect with and bring joy to has changed me, creating a more robust life and love for the world around me. Got to thinking about how I could extend that connection.
Hobbies & Other Distractions
In the last couple of years I began to pursue other interests, like buying my first building (which happens to be 117 years old), learning how to renovate a space, and woodworking, among other things. At this point, my hobbies have hobbies. All of this change has opened my eyes to a community full of people like me. Wanting to learn, no matter what it is, and wanting to create something with value that is contradictory to our throw-away society. So good!!
The first thing I did when I bought the building was get a mural up! This helped the community know a change in businesses happened…and I wanted something pretty!
Ya Gotta Have Goals
My goal for this blog, and for my life, is to experience, learn, teach, and share what I can through as many different trades/skills as possible. Making something useful and lovely with my hands and then putting it in my home, or your home, is so satisfying and worthwhile.
Supporting other craftsman through my retail shop is also a favorite way of connecting and educating folks on the beautiful and often unseen side of sustainability. We are more likely to put value on something that was made by a person we can actually relate to, making us want to keep the piece in the home. Trends are fun but when you have a piece you can build your own aesthetic around it is way more fun and lasting!
